Landslides, bank degradation, slumps and gullies are problems in engineering geology and soil conservation frecuently found watersheds. These problems are present throughout the hills and mountains of Colombia, mainly due to deforestation, man made forest fires, soil misuse and road construction. Low cost and easily available materials should be taken into account in working solutions in rural areas, such as it has been done in Valle del Cauca Departament, Colombia. Use of round wood and "guadua" (bamboo-cane of Ecuador and Colombia)is common in the construction of dikes, energy dissipators and works for deadening of water. The drainage of hillsides is one of the most often used methods to either lower the potential for slope failure or to stabilize existing gullies. The revegetation of slopes and banks by the planting of grasses and shrubs, with native species, is also a conmonly used method in the correction of gullies. In order to plan the design of works an interdisciplinary reconnissance made by geologists, civil engineers, agronomists, forestal engineers, etc., is a necessary early step. The works would be in acordance with the watershed management and the land use planning and control (AU). / VALLE DEL CAUCA |
